I am currently pursuing a DVM degree with an emphasis in small animal (canine and feline) medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon completion of this program, I intend to pursue a small animal rotating internship followed by a residency in cardiology.
My degree from Georgia Tech has strongly enhanced my understanding of the concepts presented in veterinary school. My current curriculum is fast-paced, and having a Biology degree gives me a strong foundation in content that does not receive the same level of detail in vet school. Veterinary school teaches students the information we need to become outstanding veterinarians, while my biology education from Georgia Tech provides me with additional background knowledge regarding the biological, chemical, and physical principles guiding the interactions of biological systems.
While the core Biology curriculum at Georgia Tech provides a great foundation for wherever your future in biology takes you, the wide breadth of biology elective content available offers wonderful opportunities in various aspects of the field. I recommend working with your adviser to identify classes focused on your interests, but don’t forget about exploring other areas of biology. There are many fascinating courses that you might miss!
The Georgia Tech School of Biological Sciences can prepare you well for attending a medical professional school. I highly recommend joining the clubs associated with your field or fields of interest. Through your involvement with a pre-medical association, you can meet classmates with whom you can share work and volunteer opportunities, offer and receive advice on anything from courses to professional school applications, and build connections with future colleagues. Good luck, and congratulations on beginning an amazing journey in medicine!
