About Me:

I currently work as an Education Research Consultant for organizations specializing in education research, evaluation, and grant support services for both K–12 and higher education. I support National Science Foundation and U. S. Department of Education programs in partnership with Georgia Tech, Georgia State, and various school districts throughout Georgia. I am primarily interested in innovative education practices and technology, with efforts focused on increasing diversity in STEM education and careers. I am currently exploring teaching opportunities in order to further my experience in these areas, with a long-term goal of pursuing a PhD or EdD program to further my education.

I apply the research skills and experiences I gained from my Biology degree work to my work in education research and evaluation. Most importantly, my time spent in the School of Biology taught me to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and solve problems. My coursework has been directly applicable to the work I do on a day-to-day basis—I develop research questions, design research activities, collect data, analyze the data, and communicate the findings to the education community. Additionally, reflecting on my educational experiences allows me to bring a unique, first-hand experience to my work—I was a woman in a STEM degree program, after all.

My Advice:

Stick with it! Choosing to major in Biology was the best decision I made at Tech. The program is welcoming, encouraging, and engaging! Additionally, a Biology degree from Tech will afford you many future opportunities—the degree program is a great foundation for a career and/or graduate school.

Diversify your interests! Take advantage of the Biology program’s flexible elective schedule to explore different areas of Biology as well as other academic interests. You may leave Georgia Tech with the same interests that you bought with you, but you may be like me and leave with an entirely new passion and direction. The Biology program at Georgia Tech taught me to get out of my comfort zone and explore all of the opportunities around me.

Take time to do things that interest you! You may be afraid that stepping outside of your Biology course schedule will prolong graduation, but it’s possible to do it all. You should study abroad, complete a minor, actively participate in a club, and anything else you may desire! At the end of the day, you will have broadened perspectives, an attractive resume, and unforgettable experiences.
