2018 School of Biological Sciences Award Winners

In addition to the annual Undergraduate and Teaching Assistant Awards given by the School, 4 Biology undergraduates received awards from the College of Sciences and 9 Faculty and Staff members received awards from the Institute.

School of Biological Sciences Undergraduate Awards
 

Faizah Asif

Biological Sciences Faculty Award
An award given by the SoBS faculty to a graduating Biology major who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, meritorious character, and significant contributions to the School of Biological Sciences.

Taylor Cooper

Cherry L. Emerson Research Award
An award given annually to a junior or senior Biology major in recognition of a significant achievement in undergraduate research in any subfield of biological sciences, evidenced by a research manuscript that has been accepted or submitted to a journal. This award honors two members of the Emerson legacy at Georgia Tech: Cherry L. Emerson Sr. and Cherry L. Emerson Jr.

Amelia Matthews and Kenneth Williams

John H. Ridley Award
An award given annually to a junior Biology major who plans to apply to medical school and has demonstrated outstanding scholarship and talent for research.


Ashely Alexander (Bio) and
Emily McDonald (Psyc)

Williams-Walls Award
An award given annually to one or more senior women in the life sciences (majoring in Biology or Psychology) with high academic achievement, and who has applied to graduate school.

The above students received certificates in Biomedical Science, Biomolecular Technology, Bio-Inspired Design, Environmental Science, Marine Science, and Integrative Biology during the Spring Graduation Celebration.

School of Biological Sciences Teaching Assistant Awards

This year the School made Teaching Assistant Awards in three categories, for co-instruction by graduate or undergraduate students in lab or lecture classes taught in the School of Biological Sciences. These awards acknowledge the outstanding contributions of our teaching assistants in support of the education of Georgia Tech undergraduates.

Ann Johnson

Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award
This award by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program is awarded to one student from each College based on involvement in long-term research projects, participation in conferences, published research papers, displayed leadership within the research environment, and unique contributions to the field.

Nancy Park

Virginia C. and Herschel V. Clanton Jr. Scholarship
Established by Herschel V. Clanton Jr., GS 1936, to honor his wife, Virginia, this scholarship is awarded annually to a junior in the College of Sciences who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and plans to continue his or her education in a medical field.

Harsh Patel

The Roger M. Wartell, Ph.D., and Stephen E. Brossette, M.D., Ph.D., Award for Multidisciplinary Studies in Biology, Physics, and Mathematics
This award is given to an undergraduate student with demonstrated accomplishments at the interface of biology with either physics or mathematics. The award was established by a generous donation from Dr. Stephen E. Brossette (PHYS 1993, M.D, 2000, University of Alabama, Birmingham) in recognition of the many contributions of Professor Roger M. Wartell to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Wartell, a professor of Biology and an adjunct member of the Physics faculty, served as chair of Biology from 1990 to 2004.


Katherine Wei

Cynthia L. Bossart and James Efron Scholarship
Veterinarian Dr. Cindy Bossart (BIOL 1974) and her husband, James Efron, established this scholarship to recognize high academic achievement by a student in the College of Sciences who is a non-Georgia resident.

Outstanding Achievement in Research Enterprise Enhancement Award
The award recognizes staff members who consistently improve Georgia Tech’s research programs but are not traditional researchers themselves.

The award recognizes exceptional performance in the classroom. Sigma Xi Sustained Research Award
The award recognizes Skolnick’s exceptional sustained imagination and productivity in the fields of systems biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, cancer metabolomics, protein structure prediction and evolution, drug design, and simulations of cellular processes.

Teresa Snow

Senior Academic Professional, School of Biological Sciences

Geoffrey G. Eichholz Faculty Teaching Award
The award recognizes faculty who provide outstanding teaching to students in core and general undergraduate courses and help students establish a solid foundation for their education at Georgia Tech. Colleagues say Snow empowers students to prioritize self-care and become critical health consumers.
