I have been attending Boston University working towards my Master of Public Health with certificates in epidemiology/biostatistics and maternal child health. Through BU I am currently doing my practicum at Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.
A reason I love public health is how cut crossing it can be with focus in areas like infectious disease or environmental health. My Biology degree helped me build such strong foundation. I gained valuable skills in conducting research and I regularly pull from the concepts I learned in courses like biostatistics and bioethics. I also gained a solid background in multiple chemistry and biology courses I took that has now been applicable in subjects like reproductive epidemiology.
You have a good amount of flexibility with your Biology degree to incorporate your interests through depth and breadth electives. Keep an eye out for special topics courses, and if research interests you, definitely consider doing the Research Option.
The flexibility also applies to the the addition of a minor, either in or outside of the college of science, to compliment your degree. Since public health is an intersection of science and social science I really benefited from my Biology major and Global Development minor!
