After graduating from Georgia Tech in 2012, I procured a position as a high school biology teacher. Since then, I’ve taught just about every level of biology, including AP Biology, and have also taught some Spanish. In the future I’d like to spend some years working abroad.
I was a TA at Georgia Tech for 3 semesters. The TA program was a lot better than I expected; the advisors I worked with not only helped me learn to work with students professionally, but also contributed to my desire to be a teacher – something I hadn’t considered seriously until then.
I would say my greatest strength as a teacher is my professional knowledge of the content I’m asked to deliver to my students. The ability to teach a detailed class like AP Biology comes from the diligent work I put in during my undergraduate studies
Learn facts, skills, and how to solve problems, but also learn people. Build your knowledge, but also build relationships. The things you learn in college will help determine where you’re planning on going, but the people you meet will help determine how fast you get there. Start building your career before you graduate to give yourself the best advantage in this difficult job market.
