I am currently studying medicine at the Medical College of Georgia and will graduate with my Doctorate of Medicine in 2019. Upon graduation, I plan to enter a residency program in Internal Medicine and ultimately specialize in Endocrinology.
My Biology degree from Georgia Tech not only gave me a definite advantage in my application for medical school, but it has greatly prepared me for the rigor of medical school. While at Tech, I not only had the opportunity to get very involved in extracurricular activities, but I also was able to conduct research that really helped me to stand out on my application. In addition, the curriculum of Tech’s Biology program has greatly prepared me for the classes that I am currently taking in medical school. The solid foundation of Biology, Biochemistry, and Physics that I learned at Tech has been invaluable for my continued medical education. Overall, Tech gave me the tools that I needed to succeed in medical school, and I would recommend the Georgia Tech Biology program to anybody thinking about applying for medical school.
In my time at Tech, I found that the key to success was to take advantage of the many resources that they offer. For those of you thinking about medical school, our Pre-Med office is an invaluable resource that will get you on track with your medical school application. Regardless of what you want to do after graduation, plan ahead! Take 30 minutes out on a weekend to plan out a rough schedule of the classes that you want to take for the rest of your time at Tech, and meet with an advisor to make sure that this plan works for you. While the Biology department provides you with a recommended schedule, it’s always wise to adjust this class schedule to fit your strengths and weaknesses. Finally, get involved! There are so many opportunities to participate in both social/academic clubs and research; participation in extra-curricular activities show that you are a well rounded student that can excel in more than just your classes. Regardless of your intended career choice, research is an invaluable learning experience that is applicable to every field.
