Wellness Courses

The Wellness Requirement at Georgia Tech 

Wellness is an essential part of college life.  Improving and maintaining well-being allows students to excel academically and make the most of the college experience.  As part of the Georgia Tech strategic plan, the institute is committed to creating inclusive, healthy learning environments focused on holistic well-being, development and growth.

As a result, all undergraduates at Georgia Tech will complete the Wellness Requirement by taking one of these courses: APPH 1040, APPH 1050, or APPH 1060. Each course is 2 credit hours.

Courses

APPH 1040 - Scientific Foundations of Health - Syllabus Spring 2022Syllabus Spring 2022 (SLS section) 
(2 Credit Hours)
Students will learn how genetics, the environment and human behavior influence well-being. Topics include health fitness, nutrition, stress management, body positivity, chronic disease prevention and environmental health. This course has both general and Serve-Learn-Sustain affiliated sections.  
 
APPH 1050 - The Science of Physical Activity and Health - Syllabus Spring 2022; Section Activity Descriptions
2 Credit Hours.
Students will learn the importance of health, fitness, good nutrition, stress management and chronic disease prevention. This course consists of both lecture and studio sessions.  Students must register for both.  The studio sessions are held at the Campus Recreation Center and focus on training to improve fitness and well-being. Studio options may include yoga, mindfulness, running, swimming, outdoor recreation, etc.  Section Activity descriptions are available above, and are also listed in Oscar listed under Activity.  This course has general and honors program sections.
 
APPH 1060 - Flourishing: Strategies for Well-being and Resilience - Syllabus Spring 2022
2 Credit Hours 
Everyone experiences some level of stress and adversity in their daily lives. The pressure to perform academically, complete the necessary tasks in a given day, deal with relationship issues, and/or manage financial challenges can be daunting. Learning to effectively manage life stressors is a lifelong skill. The purpose of this course is to help students improve their health and well-being and flourish in their environment by using the conceptual pillars to develop skills related to coping, resiliency, optimism, gratitude, mindfulness, and emotional intelligence.  Students will be challenged to evaluate their current overall health/well-being status and identify strategies for improvement in personal and professional growth to achieve a positive, meaningful and fulfilling life.This course has general and honors program sections.

 

Permits

In general, these courses are first-come, first-served. Graduating seniors who fail to obtain a seat when their time ticket opens should request a permit for APPH 1040 by emailing bio-registration@lists.gatech.edu with the student’s name, GTID, and course CRN. Permits for 1050 and 1060 are not currently available.  Permits for APPH 1040 will be issued during phase II registration.

 

How to request evaluation of transfer credit for Wellness credit

Students can submit transfer credit evaluation requests at https://transfercredit.gatech.edu/. Transfer credit requests will be considered only for courses that are similar in content to the Georgia Tech Wellness Requirement courses and have been taken for a letter grade.
