The College of Sciences recognized outstanding faculty and staff for the 2024-25 academic year as well as recent retirees.



School of Biological Sciences Professor Will Ratcliff was named the first recipient of the John C. and Leslie C. Sutherland Professorship, an endowed faculty position that recognizes outstanding contributions in research and teaching.



This semester, 36 faculty members from across the Institute, including four from the College of Sciences, were awarded tenure.



Professor Wheaton has been involved in the American Society of Neurorehabilitation (ASNR) for nearly two decades. His research interests initially drew him to ASNR; his belief in the organization’s mission led him to join its leadership team.

In an article published in Science, Maria Martignoni, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgia Tech’s Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection, reflects on her path as a scientist and shares advice to students: "One does not need to have a clear life plan to belong in science. Many scientists know from the start that they want to be academic researchers. But for others the path unfolds gradually, with spurts of doubt and uncertainty along the way. In a way, that’s fitting. As researchers we are explorers, and part of our mission involves finding our way without always knowing where we are going.”

In an article published in The Washington Post, Assistant Professor in the School of Biological Sciences James Stroud provides an overview of his research: Every morning in Miami, our fieldwork begins the same way. Fresh Cuban coffee and pastelitos — delicious Latin American pastries — fuel our team for another day of evolutionary detective work. In this case, we are tracking evolution in real time, measuring natural selection as it happens in a community of Caribbean lizards.Our research takes place on a South Florida island roughly the size of an American football field — assuming we are successful in sidestepping the American crocodiles that bask in the surrounding lake. We call it Lizard Island, and it's a special place.Since 2015, we have been conducting evolutionary research here on five species of remarkable lizards called anoles. Our team is working to understand one of biology's most fundamental questions: How does natural selection drive evolution in real time?This also appeared in The Conversation.

  • CMDI Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection The Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection (CMDI) is an interdisciplinary collaboration at Georgia Tech seeking to understand the ecology, interactions and evolution of microbes. We are focused on the understanding microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions that are relevant to human health, ecosystem dynamics and sustainability.
  • CSSB Center for the Study of Systems Biology Recognized by most experts in the field as the future of biology, Systems Biology seeks to understand how complex living systems interact with each other so that we can diagnose and treat disorders such as cancer.
  • ACE Aquatic Chemical Ecology Center At Georgia Tech we have organized a diverse group of ecologists, chemists, sensory biologists, engineers, and quantitative modelers, to focus on chemical cues that many organisms use for to make basic survival decisions.
  • CBID Center for Biologically Inspired Design CBID is an interdisciplinary center for research and development of design solutions that occur in biological processes.
  • CIG Center for Integrative Genomics The Center for Integrative Genomics at Georgia Tech is a virtual affiliation of researchers interested in the application of genome-wide research strategies to diverse biological themes.
  • ICRC Integrated Cancer Research Center The mission of the ICRC is to facilitate integration of the diversity of technological, computational, scientific and medical expertise at Georgia Tech and partner institutions in a coordinated effort to develop improved cancer diagnostics and therapeutics.
  • NanoMAD Center for NanoMAD Our mission is to develop new technologies for detecting, monitoring and controlling self-assembled macromolecular complexes at various levels, including their pathogenic consequences, biological roles and evolutionary origins.
